A recipe is a thing that can be passed down from generation to generation. Recipes can be associated with a story, a memory, or even a tradition. I can associate the recipe that I am going to share with a tradition.
Every year of my entire life, my family has a large Memorial Day
picnic. This tradition originated before mother was born. She told me that she cannot remember one Memorial Day
without this picnic. Everyone I know gathers at this picnic which is held at my Aunt’s ranch. Not all family comes to this place either. Friends are more than welcome! At the picnic, our family shares the same food every year. We eat my Great Aunt Edie’s flank steak recipe, with corn on the cop and baked potatoes.
My Aunt Edie’s flank steak recipe is over fifty years old. To make this delicious entrée, first, you need to make a marinade. This mouth-watering marinade consists of: a half cup of tomato juice, a half cup of canola oil, a half cup of brown sugar, a half cup of soy sauce, three cloves of garlic, a forth teaspoon of crushed pepper. Next, you buy a flank steak. After you buy this large hunk of meet, you score the steak and make crosses on both sides. Then, you mix the ingredients up and lay one flank steak in this special marinade for over twenty four hours. After you let the steak marinate, you grill this meat to your liking. I prefer medium rare. After you do all of this there is only one thing left to do, enjoy!
Although I enjoy good food a lot, I consider my Aunt Edie’s flank steak one of my favorite meals. The meat is full of juice and it grants me instant satisfaction. It is also very enjoyable because whenever I eat this meal I am with the people that I love the most. That simple fact is what makes this meal so magical to me. It is more than just meat, it is a memory, and a wonderful tradition!
